If I am living away at college do I really need an alarm?
Yes, burglars know that college students are easy prey because they tend to have expensive electronics and computer in a very concentrated area around the college campus. Also, burglars know when college students are away for winter break and spring break, and their apartments are left without protection of their valuables.
Are there any hidden costs when purchasing an alarm system from Campus Alarms?
No, you only pay of the security system kit that you purchase and monitoring if you choose. You are under no obligation to renew any service or purchase any additional services from us after your order.
What makes Campus Alarms better for college students than a different company?
Campus Alarms is tailored to the needs of college students. College students don’t stay in one place long enough to sign a long-term 5-year contract for alarm monitoring and they don’t have the money to pay $24.95/month. At campus alarms you pay only $100/year for monitoring and the system is easy to install yourself, college students are smart and thrifty, and Campus Alarms provides them with affordable alarms that they can install themselves easily.
What if I am not sure of what system is best for me?
You can email us with any questions that you have before purchasing your system. If you explain the layout of your apartment we can help you in deciding what additional components you may want to consider when purchasing your system.
What areas are important to cover with my alarm?
The main idea is to cover the areas that would get broken into because they are accessible from the outside or hallway. You want to put door contacts on any doors that you have as well as any windows that are accessible because they are on the first floor or are accessible from a fire escape. You also want to get general coverage with a motion detector in an area that is the main area of the apartment. This could be the main hallway or main living area.
Should I contact every window?
It is not necessary to contact every window in your apartment, especially if you do not live on ground level. You mainly want to contact windows that are accessible from the outside where an intruder can get in. Also, if you have a bunch of windows in a larger room you may want to get a glass break detector that will protect an entire room full of windows with one device.
What if I don’t pay for the monitoring now, can I hook it up later?
Yes, you can hookup your system to our central monitoring facility for the same low price of $100 per year with no activation fee.
Do I need to know anything about security systems to install my own system?
No, you do not need any experience with security systems to install your own systems. We provide you with simple step-by-step instructions to guide your through the entire installation process.
How long will it take me to install my security system?
If you choose to buy a hardwired system it will probably take you about 3 hours depending on how you run the wires. If you choose to buy a wireless system you can install it in about an hour or two. If you purchase central station monitoring the security system can be programmed remotely by out technicians for your codes and zone information.
When you move out of your campus apartment or dorm you can discontinue your service with no further obligation. You can also take your system with you for your new college apartment or after college apartment.
Is there a fee to reconnect my account to monitoring if I move?
No, regardless of where you move you can hookup your account for central station monitoring with no hookup fee. Just update your new address information through our website and you will be all setup with your security monitoring in your new place.
If I am moving back home after college what do I do with the alarm?
The alarm retains most of its value. When you move out you can sell the alarm to the next occupant of your apartment. They can then choose to hook it up with us for monitoring, or keep it as a local alarm.
